3. At the end of this lesson, students will be able to explain the current methods scientists use for classifying organisms.
4. At the end of this lesson, students will be able to create and use a dichotomous key.
Work with a partner to come up with a list of 25 different organisms. Make sure you include a wide range of organisms ranging from unicellular to multicellular and include both autotrophs and heterotrophs. Once you have created your list. Put the organisms into groups based on their characteristics. Be sure to make sub-groups if there are a lot of organisms in one group.
Once you have classified your organisms, meet with another group to compare the organisms you choose and the methods you used to put them into groups.
Discussion of the importance of biological classification, its history, how scientists accomplish it today.
