Biotechnology and Agriculture

Biotechnology is when humans will make modifications to a living organism for their own benefit. In agriculture biotechnology is used on both plants and animals with several benefits and drawbacks. Some benefits of biotechnology in agriculture are that it allows farmers to make more nutritional, hardy, stronger, pest resistant, faster growing crops that have more variety . Some methods of biotechnology in agriculture are more environmentally friendly than traditional methods. For example one type of modified corn does not require the use of pesticides to keep pests away which is better for the environment and more cost effective for farmers since they do not need to purchase pesticides. It allows farmers to cater to the desires of the consumers and allows them to be more efficient in their farming. Even though there are many benefits to biotechnology in agriculture there are also some drawbacks such as environmental issues, people having allergic reactions to modified crops and ethical issues with biotechnology in animals.
