The Mars Science Lab can't travel in a straight line to Mars.

The Trajectory of the Mars Science Lab can't aim for where Mars is - it has to aim for where Mars will be. The launch of the Curiosity rover also has to account for gravity produced by the sun and other planetary bodies that might affect the flight path.
