Author: Amanda Soderlind

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are a macromolecule that are a main energy source for plants and animals and are made from the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Carbohydrates are sugars and can be made up of simple sugars or multiple sugars.

Monosaccharide- carbohydrate made up of simple sugars

Disaccharide- carbohydrate made up of two sugars

Polysaccharide- carbohydrate made up of many sugars

A very common sugar in our body is glucose which is a monosaccharide.

Disaccharides form when two monosaccharides combine together. Sucrose is a common disaccharide.

Polysaccharides form when many (hundreds or even thousands) monosaccharides combine together to form substances such as starch.
