Invite the children to a lesson.
Show the students with a picture of a caveman and discuss humans need for covering their body.
Questions: what did they use to cover their body? Why? What were the advantages or disadvantages of this?
Give the children a piece of hide and discuss how it could be used to create clothing. Allow time for exploration.
Add leather and cord to the options. Pay special attention to how they could be used together.
Discuss what tools could make this process easier.
Look at several materials for needles and discuss the advantages & disadvantages of the different materials
FOLLOW UP:
Give the students a piece of leather and some primitive tools and have them design a small article of clothing
Or
The students can describe how primitive people might have engineered a tool that would have been useful in making clothing.

DIRECT AIM:  Understanding how engineering has effected our fundamental needs
INDIRECT AIM:  Create an appreciation of our ancestors
CONTROL OF ERROR:  Teacher and materials
AGE:  6-12 Years
