I love sophia! The way these courses are set up make it simple and easy to understand. I would never pay for a full priced online course when I can go through Sophia for a FRACTION of the price and the ability to work at my own pacce! I've taken three Sophia classes and plan on taking a few more before finishing my Bachelor's in Psychology.

The tutorials and videos really brought everything together. I really enjoyed working at my own pace and the availability to reach out and speak to an instructor at any time was wonderful. I would love to take another Sophia course again!

This was perfect, exactly what I needed.

I found the structure of the course to be very balanced. It tested both mechanics and style. One could move quickly through sections where the material was already known, and spend time concentrating on new skills. It was interesting to experience using different writing styles. The only downside is that it was substantially more work than I expected from an online class! :)

The course itself was educational. One of the women instructors for the Helpful Tutorials was very distracting with her rigid and unnatural gestures; which made it difficult to concentrate on the information. Also, the person correcting all of my written assignments seemed to be overly critical. I understand this an English Composition course, but I feel I should have received a better score for my final paper. I was told that many of my statements were not supporting my thesis, even though they were. Giving the background and information on how the whole autism and vaccine controversy started, and how it was retracted, is paramount to this argument. Autism and vaccinations were the whole drive behind my argumentative research essay; without that information, there would be nothing to really argue about. Reaction to my inquiries from staff at Sophia were prompt and appreciated. Thank you, Amanda Anderson

Those who graded papers where friendly and accessible, however the work itself was nothing short of excessive and irrelevant. The majority of questions to answer had grammatical errors within them, some of the answers did not seem to be the correct choice and in challenging some, I received the point because the grammar that was part of the answer was not the correct grammar at all. As far as APA formatting, I have learned this since high school. What was asked in the papers was excessive and completely unnecessary. I was told to address the rubric, which was vague and misleading. I was at one point required to write a paragraph under each reference in my WORK CITED (as it is not actually referred to as bibliography in APA formatting) explaining how I used each reference. Needless to say, I opted out of the Algebra course in fear that it would be just as excessive and absurd and gladly paid the $1000 dollars to take the class and feel assured that it would be relevant.

This was a difficult course for me. I think it was because it was my first time ever using this type class. Overall I felt It meet the needs I needed to pass the class
by Matthew T. on December 30, 2016
Overall a ok course. The lecture videos droned on quite a bit, and I found keeping focus difficult. I am not a fan of the challenge and touchstone questions as I think the method of asking a question with several near perfect answers and you have to decide which is better than the others is frustrating. On the writing pieces, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of detailed marking and feedback I received back.

  • Q: Does Sophia accept third-party payment for tuition, such as financial aid or military benefits?
A: Sophia courses are not eligible for most third party payment methods, and must be paid for by credit or debit card. Tuition is due at the time of course registration. Sophia offers both full and partial payment plans as part of the registration process.
  • Q: When do the courses start and how long do I have to complete a course?
A: You choose your own start date and have 60 days to complete each course. However, because the courses are self-paced, you can complete them in fewer than 60 days.
  • Q: Where do I get the textbooks for my course?
A: You do not need any textbooks for Sophia courses. All material is taught by video and text-based tutorials that are in the course room, and are included in the cost.
  • Q: How am I graded in the course?
A: Your overall score is derived from how you do on two types of assessments: Challenges, which are formative assessments, and Milestones, which are summative assessments. (Sophia’s English Composition I course also includes written assignments, called Touchstones, that also contribute to your overall score.)

Sophia courses are graded on a pass/fail basis. No letter grade is issued for a completed course.
  • Q: How do I know which courses I should take?
A: Consult with your academic adviser at your university to determine specifically which Sophia courses could fit into your program. You can download the course syllabus directly from our site to share with your school advisor.
