this was quite informative and a great learning experience

I'm a visual learner. This was one of the reasons why I chose an online course; I always wondered why I should pay a ton of money to take an in-person class when I learn best by reading from the text. Unfortunately, most of the tutorials for the course were videos that didn't seem to be particularly well done. One of the instructors had her videos transcribed, but they were laden with mistakes and verbal tics, for example, every sentence for two paragraphs in a row starting with "so," filled with "okay," or "I'm sorry, I meant this, not that." This is confusing to reader and viewer, and considering that the videos and their transcriptions are the only source of information for the site, they should have some more time put in to make them appropriate and streamlined. Overall the course was alright, I liked going at my own pace and how quickly the verification milestone was able to be completed. The whole process could just be a bit more streamlined to really make it exceptional.

Much better than the Conflict Resolution course that I took! Much more information, formatted much better, not as vague as the previous course I took on Sophia.

A very challenging class. A lot of new, unfamiliar material. Although exceptionally educational, it was by far the most difficult class.
by Shiloh H. on July 17, 2016
I was rather impressed. I really enjoyed this course. There were a few questions that weren't covered in the tutorials, which was frustrating. But this did not happen often enough that it caused me to fail the course by any means. I think of all the questions, it happened twice. This course is worth the cost, especially as an alternative to going through the University's course (cost and time). Thank you!

This course helps in many ways. You are given different tutorials for each subject and given ample time to work at your own pace. I had a great experience with this course in

I enjoyed the lessons; particularly Amanda's videos! However, I found the limitation of notes to one page a bit redundant if we are allowed to use the tutorials for the final exam. My opinion, if tutorials are allowed, our notes (however many pages) should be allowed as well. I also think that it needs to be stressed more clearly that tutorials can be used to begin with; had I known that I would have passed my first attempt and saved myself money at having to re-test. Thank you. Tonya Saindon

Thanks for the feedback Tonya! I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the course overall. For future reference, you are allowed to use tutorials during any assessments in your course. The student guide covers that information. And as always, don't hesitate to contact a learning coach if you have any questions during your course. Congrats on your successful completion!

  • Q: What does "Try it for Free" mean?

A: The Free Trial allows you to access the course of your choice, or multiple courses. It gives you access to the first unit ("Challenge 1") in the course. This will let you meet the course instructors, sample the instructional content, and answer a set of assessment questions in the Challenge. You can also read the Student Guide and watch an Orientation Video to learn more about the course format, requirements, and resources.

Any work you complete in the Free Trial is saved, so if you decide to register, you do not need to repeat it. Of course, we also let you reset it and start over if you wish.

  • Q: Does Sophia accept third-party payment for tuition, such as financial aid or military benefits?

A: Sophia courses are not eligible for most third party payment methods. Course tuition is paid by the student, using a credit or debit card. Tuition is due at the time of course registration. Sophia offers a payment plan option for course tuition.

  • Q: When do the courses start and how long do I have to complete a course?

A: You choose your own course start date and have 60 days from your chosen start date to complete each course. Sophia courses are self-paced, so many students complete a course in less than 60 days.

  • Q: Where do I get the textbooks for my course?

A: You do not need any textbooks for Sophia courses. All material is taught by video and text-based tutorials that are in the courseroom, and are included in the course tuition.

  • Q: How am I graded in the course?

A: Sophia courses are graded on a pass/fail basis, with 70% overall required to pass the course. Your score is based upon points earned in the formative assessments ("Challenges"), summative assessments ("Milestones"), and if applicable, the authentic assessments ("Touchstones"). Currently, our Foundations of English Composition, English Composition I, and Public Speaking courses contain Touchstones.

  • Q: How do I know which courses I should take?

A: Consult with your academic adviser at your university to determine specifically which Sophia courses could fit into your program. You can download the course syllabus directly from our site to share with your school advisor.

  • Q: Are the tests proctored?

A: Sophia courses utilize keyboard biometrics as an alternative to proctoring. No webcam is needed for a Sophia course.

  • Q: I'm taking a course where I have to submit Touchstones. How long does it take for my Touchstone to be graded once it's submitted?

A: We provide our faculty graders with up to 7 business days to grade a Touchstone. The actual time may vary based on volume and grader capacity.

Oh no. Please don't go.
