Students will be able to describe waves as a means of transporting energy. They will then relate frequency and wavelength of mechanical waves and explain the relationship between wavelength, frequency, period, wave speed as applied to sound waves and mathematically solve for each. Students will investigate the phenomena of reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction and explain types of interference including constructive and destructive. Students demonstrate and explain apparent frequency changes due to Doppler Effect. They will use the law of reflection as it applies to echoes. They will explain the relationship of the speed of sound to temperature and the make-up of medium. Finally students will make instruments to illustrate interference of sound waves to produce resonance in various types of musical instruments and will identify ranges for infrasonic, ultrasonic, supersonic, and audible sounds. To finish the unit, students will describe applications of sound to sonar, ultrasound and bats. We will spend one day discussing Deafness and sign language. Directions for completing your "homework" I introduced it to you in class already. Here are the steps to have done by the due date on your Unit Plan. 1. Watch and take notes 2. Complete the Summarizing Questions. They are located under the video and should be written in your notebook under your notes. 3. Write 1 question using the questions on the back of the Unit Plan to help you. That is it. Bring those three things everyday to class and you will be able to do the fun activities for the day. Otherwise, you will be doing the above in class and missing out on the activities.
