When I try to use certain screencasting tools, I get a message about Java being enabled. What does this mean and what should I do?

Hi Carolyn,
My name is Chris, I'm an employee at SOPHIA. The screen recorder built into SOPHIA requires Java. If you're not sure what version of Java you have, I'd suggest upgrading to the latest version, which you can get from here: https://java.com/en/download/index.jsp.

After Java is installed, you'll also need to make sure it's enabled in your browser. Most browsers come with Java disabled by default, so you'll probably need to tweak the settings in your browser to get this working. You might find this article helpful when trying to find where the Java setting is in your browser: http://java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.xml

Hope you enjoy the site!

The main advantage of using a java applet is it lets you record things outside of the browser window. So for example, if you want to narrate a a presentation with PowerPoint open in the background, you can do that with the Java applet. The HTML5 solutions I'm aware of only work inside the browser window. So they're more of a recordable white board than a full-featured screen recorder.

We're always interested in adding new tools to the site - so if you (or others) have ideas please feel free to pass them along and we'll take a closer look!

Is Sophia looking at HTML 5? If I understand it correctly; HTML 5 does not require Java, allowing it to work on iPads.
