8.6A Unbalanced Forces

Practice: Copy this in your journal

Two children are pulling a rope from opposite ends. The child on the left pulls the rope with a force of 100 N and the child on the right pulls it with a force of 55 N. What is the net force acting on the rope and in which direction is it acting?

Solution:

The child on the left is pulling with a force of 100N

The child on the right is pulling with a force of 55N

The net force would be the difference between 100N and 55N. 100N-55N= 45N

The stronger force is pulling to the left

The answer is that the rope will move to the left with a  force of 45N.
