As you read through this novel by Patrick Ness, pay close attention to our main protagonist. You will be analyzing the character, Conor O'Malley as well as the Monster. 

You will submit the assignment through Google Docs. Record your responses and make sure to label each section with it's respective title.

Analyzing Characters

This is a short video describing how characters are presented.

Part 1: Who is Conor O'Malley? The Monster?

Write down explicit information you know about these two characters. This is information that the author tells us. 

Part 2a: Identity/ Characteristics

The characteristics and personality of a person can say a lot about them. Their general attitude carries out who they are. Looking at the novel, how can we apply this idea to Conor and the Monster? 

What does their personality say about them?

Questions to help you get started:

What type of person is Conor? What is his attitude throughout the novel?

What about the Monster? What kind of emotions does the Monster show? 

Part 2b: Personality Traits

Read the following article and determine which of the 5 traits fits Coner the best. Explain your answer and support with evidence from the novel.

Part 3: Complexity

Watch the following video about characterization.

How many of the types mentioned in the video matches to Conor? What are some events in the novel that shows us about those types that you have chosen?

Part 4: Writing Assignment

In this final section, your assignment is to write a 2-3 page essay about Conor or the Tree.

Prompt for Conor: Choose a theme from the novel and determine how it helps to create Conor's identity. What makes him a complex character?

Prompt for the Tree: What is the purpose of the Tree? How does this character help build up Conor? Choose at least one of the Tree's story and explain it's relevance to Conor.
