This tutorial will explain the structure of the Prose Fiction subsection of the Reading Comprehension ACT exam. It will explain important strategies for success and basic tips of the trade. Our experts here at Sophia have chosen these strategies based on their experience raising students’ scores.
- When reading the Prose Fiction section, do not focus on just the events. Recognize the relationships between the characters, and the tone and emotion conveyed by the dialogue of the characters (pay attention to the characters’ emotions, moods, interests and personalities.)
- Interpretation is the main form of assessment. Questions will most likely ask why the author used a certain language or tone to communicate, what happened before the passage, what may happen after the passage, how the characters feel about the events in the passage…
- be a detective and try to figure out what is really going on, what do the characters actually mean, are they anxious, upset, elated?
