Hi, my name is Ashley. And today's lesson is titled, "Action Planning in Personalized Learning Environments." In today's lesson, we will look at what an action plan is and how it can be used. In this lesson, you will hear frequently the terms PDSA, continuous improvement, Baldrige 10 quality tools, and action plans.
An action plan can be used by the whole class or an individual. It is used to record tasks and provide a timeline in order to meet goals. This tool can be used for continuous improvement. It holds an individual or group responsible of performance task and helps to monitor results.
So let's take a look at an action plan. This action plan is called the PDSA. This can be found on the Montgomery County Public Schools website. And this is their Baldrige 10 quality tools. If you scroll to the very bottom, you'll see that they have their action plans here. And a PDSA is a form of an action plan. Let's see what this looks like a little bit closer up.
Here in the Plan section this is where, you say, what is my data telling me? Do, based on the data, what action should I take? What action should the students take? The arrows pointing to here to the Study-- are the actions or steps helping me reach the goal? And then here in the Act, should I continue or change the action steps based upon my current results?
So a PDSA is a form of an action plan. We're also going to look at another action plan template. So here it is. It has five main sections.
Here, where is this says, what is my goal, is where you'll write your goal. And you also will choose a plan of how you'll reach your goal, a date for when your goal should be completed, and a list of tasks and assessments that will be used to complete the goal. On this side of the table is where you'll include dates of when the task or assessment will be given. And below is a graph where you will track data.
Let's say your class goal is that by the end of the school year, you want all of your students to have mastered their multiplication facts. So that will go right here where says, what is my goal? How will you reach the goal? The goal can be reached through instruction, and practice, and assessments. The date for completion would be June 2015.
And for a tasks and assessments, this will be a list of either practice activities or practicing with flashcards, a weekly multiplication assessment that will be given in order to help us get to this goal. And lastly, at the bottom, here's where you would include a graph maybe every month or however often you complete the assessments.
You take a class average. So for January 2015 the class average was a 68. And in February 2015, the class average was a 75. So that you could track the progress of the class.
Now an action plan such as this would also be good to use for individual students. There might be one whole action plan for the class in order to reach the class goal, but then each individual student may have their own action plan so they can meet their own goal for mastering their multiplication facts by the end of the year. So you might have some students who have already mastered it, but when you think about the whole class, the whole class may still be working towards the goal.
How does the implementation of action plans involve personalized learning? Well, if you recall, personalized learning is flexible, anytime, everywhere learning. Allowing students to create an action plan allows them to also be focused on their goal whether at school or home, anywhere they could be. It redefines the teacher role and expands the role of the teacher in that now we're given the responsibility to the student to monitor their progress and to manage how well they know information. So the responsibility belongs to the student, and the teacher is now the guide and the coach.
It involves authentic learning because students are doing this for themselves. It's a real-world object where in the real world, people are setting goals from themselves or their businesses and tasks in order to meet their goals-- which also brings me to the point where it's student-driven. Students can find something that they know that they're lacking in and create a goal for themselves and plan out a way to meet their goal. Lastly, it is based on competency and mastery. Because the student wants to meet a certain goal, therefore they cannot move on to the next goal until they have met the previous goal.
So in this lesson, we talked mainly about what an action plan is and how to complete one. It helps you organize your goals and come up with a list of tasks needed in order to meet the goal. And it includes a graph where you can track and monitor your data.
As we bring the lesson to a close, consider the following. Create your own action plan surrounding a class goal. You may also complete an action plan as a class until students are able to use it for their individual goals.

A Guide for Implementing Personalized Student Learning Plan (PSLP) Programs
The New Jersey Administrative Code defines a Personalized Student Learning Plan as a “formalized plan and
process that involves students setting learning goals based on personal, academic and career
interests beginning in the middle school grades and continuing throughout high school with the
close support of adult mentors that include teachers, school counselors, and parents” (N.J.A.C.
6A:8). This plan can be used as a guidance document for schools interested in establishing personalized learning plans for their students based upon the New Jersey Department of Education model.
