An Introduction to Geometry

An Introduction to Geometry

Author: Sonia Aguilar

Standard: Geometry

Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.

1. Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.

Objective: Students will learn basic geometry vocabulary

Grade: 4th

This is just a brief introduction to geometry terms. Students will learn what a point, a line, a line segment, a ray, an angle, and a plane is through slide shows and will have the opportunity to test their knowledge with the quiz.

To gain comprehension of the above mentioned objective, complete the following tasks:

  1. Take a line or blank piece of paper and fold it into six sections. Like in the picture below.
  2. Label each section with the geometry terms listed below.
  3. Watch the slideshow Geometry Terms. As you watch make an illustration of each term under the corresponding section on your folded paper.
  4. Watch the second slideshow Geometry in Real Life. Turn your paper around and make a list of examples for each term behind its corresponding section.
  5. Watch the video Math Antics - Points, Lines, & Planes. The video will go into more detail about the terms. On your folded paper or on a separate piece of paper, write something you didn't know that you learned from the video about each term.
  6. Put your name on your paper and bring to class to turn in.
  7. Study your notes, put them aside or away where you can't see them, and take the quiz to test your knowledge about geometry terms.
  8. (Optional) Go to the website and explore. The website allows you to do interactive activities. Only concentrate on the learned terms.
  9. (Optional) Watch the video Types of Angles Introduction. The video gives you an introduction to the types of angles, which we will be learning shortly after.
