Hi, my name is Ashley, and today's lesson is titled "Applying Constructivism to Adaptive Learning." In today's lesson, we will recap the theory of constructivism, we will see how constructivism supports adaptive learning, and then take a look at best practices and tips for incorporating constructivism and adaptive learning.
The theory of constructivism demonstrates how learning is an active, productive process that involves the building up of knowledge. We make sense of new information that is given through assimilation, or in other words, knowledge from what we absorb around us. We adjust what we know as a result of recent learning opportunities.
Constructivism and adaptive learning are aligned in that they both support the use of individualized learning. Technology is used to present learning that is personalized for students through computer programs and videos and simulations. This is used to address individual strengths and weaknesses.
It also gives access to current information, allowing students to develop their own ideas and apply what they have learned. The adaptive learning technologies that are used ensure that students are able to build on their knowledge and construct new meaning of understandings.
What are best practices and tips for incorporating constructivism and adaptive learning? Readiness is key. Instruction should focus on information at the student's current level of performance to ensure that the student is willing and able to learn. Spiral organization involves the structure of information so that it can easily be grasped by the student. The information also must go beyond what is given. Instructions should be designed to facilitate extrapolation, or fill in the gaps.
In today's lesson, we recap the theory of constructivism. Constructivism is the theory that learning is an active and productive process.
