- Students will develop an understanding of the concept of perseverance.

 

- Students will identify examples of perseverance from their own lives.

 

- Students will explain the importance perseverance plays in their actions and in the actions of others.

This is a video about female athletes overcoming the struggles and barriers of competing in sports that is inspired by the 40th anniversary of Title IV.  These athletes describe their feelings, emotions, and experiences about being successful in the world of sports.  The women athletes talk about core values that were essential in becoming the women they have become.   

Materials

- White board, chalkboard, overhead

projector or easel with chart paper

- Downloadable clip:

Nike "Voices"

- TV and DVD player and/or a computer

Procedure

Students will be shown clip.

Students will write answers to prompts.

Large group discussion based on student responses to the questions.

Assignment

Students will write responses to the following questions on a spare

piece of paper:

- Describe a time in your life when you worked especially hard to accomplish

a goal.

- Why was it important for you to keep working toward this goal?

- Describe the times when you felt like giving up.

- What motivated you to keep going?

- Which people or events helped you?

- What made it difficult for you to continue?

- How did it feel to continue your work when it was difficult to do so?

- How did you feel when you had accomplished your task?

Social Participation

Students will talk as whole groups and as individuals or in partners.  All students will work with another student when sharing their writing responses and then will pick one to share with whole group.  Then students may choose to work with another partner to write their reflection.  Women athletes abilities to have perseverance in connection or comparison with students’ abilities to have perseverance.

Reflection

Students are to write about the way they feel or think about another students answers to the writing prompts or they can write about the way they think or felt about the females in the video.
