Children's Liturgy Series: 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A)

Author: Joyce Bott

Introduction

Imagine how you would feel if your parents wanted to send you to Africa to tell the children there all about Jesus. How would you feel traveling to a strange country all alone? Jesus wanted his disciples to share the Good News with everyone, and they were afraid, too.

Opening Prayer

Dear God, I love You so much and one of my deepest desires is that every person know and love You. My heart aches that so many souls don't have a relationship with You, especially those whom I know personally. I want to be a witness to them; show me how. Let them look at me and see only You. Help them to understand it's You they're searching for, it's You their heart is longing for. Place the right circumstances and people in their lives in order to point them towards You. I know You have a plan and that You desire holiness and salvation for every soul. I give these lost souls to you. Lead them home. Amen.

Gospel (Matthew 10:26-33)

Before Jesus sent the apostles out to bring the Good News to the people, he gathered them together and sad:"Do not be afraid to stand before the crowds and speak, even though there will be amany who wish you harm and will not listen.

"My heavently father knows when even one little sparrow falls dead from the sky, and you mean more to him than all the birds in the world. He will watch over you and see how brave you are. If you lose your life for my sake, your reward will be great in heaven and you will share in my father's glory and have life everlasting."

Reflection

Ask the group to name some things that people fear. Then ask: What are some things people do to calm their fears? (Accept all reasonable answers.)

Ask: From this reading, what kind of fears do you think Jesus was talking about? (persecution for one’s beliefs) What reassurance does Jesus give to his disciples? (God knows our fears. We are valuable to God. If we persevere during persecution, we will be rewarded.)

Ask: Is it easy to stand up for what one believes? (Accept all reasonable answers.) What challenges have you had to face when standing up for your beliefs? (Accept all reasonable answers.) What reassurance do you hear in this Gospel for these challenges? (Accept all reasonable answers.)
