Children's Liturgy Series: 6th Sunday of Easter (Cycle A)

Author: Joyce Bott

Introduction

As Jesus shared the Last Supper with his apostles, he told them that soon he would be leaving them. They were frightened and upset by his words, but he promised to send someone to help them. He would not leave them on their own.

Opening Prayer: Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.

Lord,
by the light of the Holy Spirit
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit
help us to relish what is right
and always rejoice in your consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Gospel (John 14:16-20)

One day Jesus said to his disciples, "I will not leave you on your own; I will ask my father to send you a helper who will stay with you always. The spirit of God will be with you and in you, though others will not be able to see him or know that he is there. He will fill you with wisdom and understanding. Soon the world will not see me again, but you will know that I am truly alive."

Reflection

  • Ask: How many of you have had a friend or family member move away? What was that experience like? (Invite kids to share.)
  • Say: When people move away or go away for a short time, they sometimes give farewell gifts to friends or family members who stay behind. Why might people do that? (Accept all reasonable answers.)
  • Say: In today’s Gospel, Jesus promises his disciples that even though he will leave them, he will not abandon them. Instead they will receive a great gift, a helper who will reveal to them the great love that exists between the Father and the Son and the disciples.
  • Say: Jesus has also given us the gift of the Holy Spirit, whom we received in Baptism. If we call upon the Holy Spirit, he will help us understand God’s love for us and will help us follow Jesus.

Closing Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit, and breathe you life into us, so that we can bring Christ into the world and touch the lives of others with his love.
