Compound Circuits

Author: Dan Welty

There are several steps to solving a compound circuit problem:

Step 1.  Determine the total resistance of the circuit.  (identify which resistors are in series and which are in parallel and add them accordingly)

Step 2.  Calculate the total current through the entire circuit using Ohm's Law.

Step 3.  Follow the total current through the circuit and identify which resistors, if any, the total current flows through.

Step 4.  Apply Ohm's Law to each resistor to calculate the voltage across and the current through each resistor.

Compound Circuit Problem Solving

Students are challenged to solve a compound circuit problem. They must first calculate the total resistance of the circuit and then the total current flowing through the circuit. Finally they can then determine the voltage across and the current through each resistor.
