Compounds and Elements

Author: Amanda Soderlind

Elements are a pure substance made up of atoms. Elements cannot be broken down any farther without changing what they are. There are many elements known to man and they can all be found on the periodic table of elements. Perhaps you have heard of gold, silver, aluminum, helium or oxygen. These are just a few elements you would find on the periodic table of elements. If you look around you right now you will see many things that are made up of elements! Elements can undergo chemical reactions and bond with another element forming a compound.

Compound= two or more elements bonded together

Example: Sodium (Na) is an element and Chlorine (Cl) is an element. When they react with each other in a chemical reaction they form Sodium Chloride (NaCl) which is a compound and is a fancy name for table salt!
