dictionaries, and thesauruses.

Essential Question: How can context clues help me to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word?

We are going to discuss how context clues help us to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Context Clue: words or phrases near an unfamiliar word that help readers figure out the word’s meaning.

Definition Clue: directly tells the meaning of the word.

  • Example: After a time, glaciers, or slow moving rivers of ice, formed over many parts of earth. In this sentence, the words "slow moving rivers of ice" tell us what glaciers are.

Antonym Context Clues: words that are around a difficult word that mean the opposite or near opposite as the word.

  • Example: Joe was reluctant to take the job as team captain. He was afraid that it would take up too much of his time and hurt his grades. On the other hand, Billy was eager to become the team captain.

Synonym: words that are around a difficult word that mean thee same or nearly the same as the word.

  • Example: After seeing the picture of the starving children, we felt compassion or pity for their suffering.
