Part One: Single Sample T-Test

STEP 1: Label Variables. Go to “Variable View” in SPSS and input the following data (see data below) into SPSS after identifying the variable names. Remember to specify the measure of the variable based on your working knowledge of scales of measurement. Below are step-by-step instructions along with the data set. Review the tutorial on single sample t-tests for more information.

First, input this data into SPSS. Provide a name for each variable that corresponds to the name here. For example, for Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, use MSCEIT total score, then name the variable in SPSS MSCEIT_TOT. This represents the participants’ total score on the emotional intelligence test. The MSCEIT measures participants’ emotional intelligence abilities in 4 areas: 1) ability to identify emotions in facial expressions, 2) ability to use emotions to facilitate thought, 3) ability to understand emotions, and 4) ability to manage emotions. A sample item from the MSCEIT is as follows. For the purposes of this assignment, note that the mean Emotional Intelligence score is 100 (in other words, “the test value”).

STEP 2: Input the data below in the “Data View.” After inputting the variable name for the MSCIET, input the data. Note that, unlike future t-tests that will be discussed, the single sample t-test only has one sample.

Now, conduct a single sample t-test using the data below that you have entered and coded in SPSS. If you purchased the Green and Salkind text, review the SPSS manual “Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh: Analyzing and Understanding Data” for more information on how to run a single sample t-test. Insert a screenshot of the output/results generated by SPSS (using the Snipping Tool for Microsoft Windows and the Grab tool for Macintosh) in the Microsoft Word document, answering the following questions. Also, see the presentation provided on Blackboard for conducting a single-sample t-test.

Interpret the results using current APA style (see the current APA manual and the Green and Salkind text for samples of APA-style results sections for a single sample t-test and related calculations). Be sure to answer the following in your APA styles results section.

What variables were analyzed?

What was the purpose of the test?

Report the results of the statistical test (including the alpha level, degrees of freedom, t value, and p value). For example, “With alpha set at .05 the one-sample t test was significantly different from 50, t(29) = 2.46, p=.02” (Green & Salkind, 2013, p. 149).
