Creating A Learning Packet

Creating a learning packet in Sophia

Creating A New Packet:
To start, login to www.sophia.org and click on the "Create New Packet" button on the lower left side of the screen.

Titling A Packet:After logging in, you'll be prompted to title your packet.  It's important that you pick a name that clearly describes what you're trying to teach.  If you're covering dividing fractions, a good title name might be "How To Divide Fractions."

Content Editor / Publishing Editor / Description: After you enter and save your title, you'll be brought to the packet editor screen.  Here, there are three main tabs to help manage the content of your packet, the publishing options and the meta-data - or description.

Replacing The Cover Image: I typically like to start by filling out the information under the description tab.  By walking through the objective and summary, it helps me think through how I'm going to present the information I'll be teaching.  The first thing I do is replace the cover image with a relevant image that helps visualize what it is I'm teaching.

Adding Meta Info:After replacing the default cover image with a relevant image (and source), you can edit the title and add important meta information to the packet like the objective, summary, relevant courses, textbooks, etc.

Assigning Education Level: Finally, it's important to choose the grade level that's most applicable to the content that you're teaching.  While we do allow (and ask you) to check all that apply, more accurate descriptions help users find more relevant content.

Using the Toolbox: When entering content into Sophia in the Content Editor, you can simply add different sections of content based on the media type you'd like to use.  These sections can be added by clicking on the media type in our "toolbox" found on the left side of the Sophia Content Editor.

Adding A Text Section and Slide Show: In the packet I created in the video above, I used a Text/Image section and a slide show section created from the Toolbox.  After inserting the text section, I added a Title and some body copy.  After saving that section, I uploaded a powerpoint I had created offline via the Slide Show button.  Those two screens are seen below.

Packet Publishing: The final step in making sure my learning packet is visible to the world is to publish it.  I can publish my packet by going into the Publishing tab and selecting "Publish to the world" (which we encourage).  We do know however that some people want to share content and learn within a group setting, so we do allow publishing to a new group and/or to a group that you're already a member of.
