Hello, and thank you for joining me for deeper learning and collaborative teaching and learning. Today's essential question is, how does collaborative teaching and learning implement the learning principles of deeper learning? To support student achievement and growth.
Let's begin by having a deeper learning review. Remember that in deeper learning, students develop a deeper understanding of the content. Also, students apply content knowledge to problems. And this is considered knowledge transfer. So they're reviewing the knowledge that they have for the content area to problems that they encounter in the real world-- authentic problems.
And students build competencies. These competencies are connected to several things, including content, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation define deeper learning as a set of competencies students must master in order to develop a keen understanding of academic content and apply their knowledge to problems in the classroom and on the job.
How exactly is deeper learning connected to collaborative teaching and learning? Let's look at a couple of areas that are similar between the two concepts. One is that there's a focus on working together. There's also a focus on solving real-world authentic problems. And deeper learning requires communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
And if you'll remember, these are the 4Cs of collaborative teaching and learning. Why should we use deeper learning? In a study conducted by AIR, which stands for the American Institute for Research, there were several findings that led people to believe that deeper learning was a value.
This study involved 1,762 people. And it took place in 22 schools within 10 deeper learning networks-- was in California and New York. They found that students in these schools who focused on deeper learning had higher academic achievement on standardized tests, specifically in the core academic areas.
They also found that students stated themselves that they were more engaged, and that they were able to attain necessary skills so that they could problem solve on their own without asking the teacher for assistance. Also, there was a higher rate of on-time graduation and enrollment into colleges and universities than a typical high school. And lastly, both students and teachers in these schools reported a positive impact from having a deeper learning network.
Let's reflect. Do you think you will use deeper learning in your classroom? And how would your students benefit? And what finding from the AIR report is most intriguing to you? Why? Such a review. Today, we answered the essential question of, how does collaborative teaching and learning implement the learning principles of deeper learning to support student achievement and growth?
