Hi, I'm Jeff. And in this lesson, we'll learn about the best practices for developing direct reports. So let's get started. One of the primary responsibilities every manager has is assisting their direct reports with their work and their careers. It reflects well on a manager to show that they are a good mentor, as well as a good manager.
Let's talk about some of the ways to accomplish this in order to communicate and manage a direct report. A good manager should provide challenging goals and tasks. Employees need goals that push them beyond their comfort zone without causing too much unneeded stress and hold development discussions often and regularly. Managers should ask their employees questions about areas where they feel they might improve.
In order to develop the career goals of a direct report, a good manager should be conscious and mindful of workers career goals. A manager must not only know and employees goals, but must be willing to implement the plans necessary to help an employee reach those goals and construct compelling development plans and follow through on them. Development plans should be discussed with an employee so they understand that they are partners in the process and to help direct reports with job changes and skills.
A good manager should get direct reports to accept developmental moves. Sometimes it can be scary for an employee to make the changes necessary to improve their career. A manager should provide guidance and advice to employees about the new position and the new opportunities that will provide and work to develop people's skills. Finally, managers should find creative and engaging ways to grow a person's skill set. This will improve the employee's current performance and prepare them for advancement in the future.
OK, nice work. In this lesson, we learned that managers need to help develop their staff. We talked about the ways managers can communicate, and manage direct reports, help them develop career goals, and assist with their job changes in skills. Thanks for your time, and have a great day.
