In the years just before and just after the Civil War, the Amerindians of the Great Plains were able to have some success in gaining land rights for themselves, while still allowing white settlers on their way to Oregon through. The United States army was not quite so sure that it should be that way and did what they could to "prevent" the Amerindians from attacking. In the end, however, the Amerindians gained some land rights in the region that they had called home for generations.
