Electron Affinity

Author: Marilyn Nowicki

Electron affinity is the amount of energy released when an electron is added to a neutral atom. Most nonmetals will release energy when an electron is gained to form a negative ion. This amount of energy is known as electron affinity. In the diagram, chlorine gains an electron to fill its outer energy level. In the process, it would release energy.
