Flipped Professional Development

After writing my reflections on flipped classroom, I realized that I have been flipping professional development sessions for teachers for some time.  I began flipping when I started to work with teachers on technology integration in the classroom.  I began to realize that one session, even a hands-on session, was not sufficient for the adult learner or digital immigrant.  I began creating video tutorials and written, step-by-step cheat sheets that teachers could access before, during, and after a workshop.  In doing so, I realized that I was missing some important elements: connections to the research, examples and reflections of my own application and that of their peers, and selections of relevant articles and reading materials.  Since my first sessions, I have expanded my professional development sessions to include these elements.  

It is my hope that teachers will be able to pace their own learning with access to all of these resources organized for them in one place.  To that end, I have selected www.sophia.org to create and house these tutorials and resource collections for professional development.  Feedback from my teachers has been positive.  They are able to preview and revisit each lesson.  If they are unable to attend, they are able to use the videos and resources to practice on their own time.  In the end, I am able to model the instructional strategies and technology integration that I would like to observe when visiting classrooms.
