In this tutorial, we'll learn how to use badges to encourage and track student progress in gamification. We'll begin by defining the concept of a badge, and then we'll explore some benefits of using badges in the gamified classroom. Let's get started.
A badge is an emblem that a student can earn upon completion of a task, or mastery of a competency. You can create your own badges from scratch, you can use a badge system that is built into a platform that you're already using in your classroom, like Edmodo or Khan Academy, or you can use a badge creation website, like classbadges.com.
Why might you choose to award badges in your gamified classroom? Well, awarding badges brings gamification to the classroom. As a student progresses through the levels in the gamified classroom or builds their content mastery, the badges that they earn demonstrate their proficiency within the performance expectations outlined by the teacher.
The badges serve as visual reminders of their content mastery, and act as incentives for even more hard work. Badges can be motivating, as they encourage students to keep working so that they can keep leveling up. In this tutorial, we defined a badge in the context of a gamified classroom, and we outlined the benefits of using badges in this environment.
So here's a chance for you to stop and reflect. Do you think your students would be motivated by the concept of earning badges that celebrate their achievements? As you reflect on how this new information can be applied, you may want to explore the additional resources section that accompanies this video presentation. This is where you'll find links to resources chosen to help you deepen your learning and explore ways to apply your newly acquired skill set. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
