Hi, my name is Ashley, and today's lesson is titled Gamification and CBE. In today's lesson, we will take a look at the definition of competency based education, also known as CBE. And we'll see how CBE can be connected to gamification. Lastly, we will look at the steps to take in order to create a CBE lesson using adaptive learning technologies.
What is competency based education? Competency based education is the educational model that awards based on master content. When an individual has shown that they fully understand the concept, then it is mastered, and they are able to move to the next set of competencies. It is usually either online or in person, and the individual is able to move at their own pace.
What do CBE and gamification have in common? Remember, gamification is the idea of making the classroom game like. As a result, both gamification and competency based education incorporate the use of adaptive learning technologies, such as computers and online programs and tools. They both do a excellent job at engaging learners and allow students to work at their own pace.
For mastering content, students are also awarded with points or badges and then promoted to the next challenge. There are already some great programs that have playlists already built in, programs such as TenMarks Math, Sum Dog, and Read Naturally. How do you create a CBE lesson using adaptive learning technologies? First, design a pre-assessment in order to have a foundation of where to begin your instruction.
This baseline will inform you on what your students already know or may not know. This will help you design activities that will best meet their needs. Next, create objectives the students must meet, then allow students to work through their playlists. The playlist is an organized list of activities the students will be engaged in, in order to meet the objectives.
Next, teach students to monitor their own progress by tracking their data using a graph or spreadsheet. And the last thing is to remember to award accomplishments with badges or points. You can even use an online database to award students for their achievements.
What did you learn today? In today's lesson, we looked at the definition of competency based education, which is plainly a self paced program that awards students based on content they have mastered and have a complete understanding of. We looked at how gamification and CBE are similar in that they both incorporate adaptive learning technologies, engaged learners, and allow students to work at their own pace.
Lastly, you were given the steps on how to create your own CBE lesson using adaptive learning technologies. Some of the steps include designing a pre-assessment, creating objectives for students, letting students work at their own pace on their playlists, and awarding accomplishments with badges or points. As you reflect on today's lesson, consider the following questions. What objectives will you use for your CBE lesson?
What adaptive learning technologies will you use to carry out the lesson? Will you create your own badges or use a website, such as classbadges.com? For more information on how to apply what you've learned in this video, please view the additional resources section that accompanies this video presentation. Competency-Based Education
Sasha Thackaberry blogs about CBE and connects competency based education with digital badges. In this post, she includes a narrated presentation on CBE and the Breakthrough Models Incubator Project. Importantly, she includes a creative commons cheat sheet on CBE with connected links and resources that you can download as you explore CBE. The cheat sheet is a helpful tool for anyone getting started or interested in CBE.
