Hi. My name is Ashley, and today's lesson is titled gamification delivery. In today's lesson, we will review the definition of competency-based education. Then we will look at the connection between gamification and CBE when adaptive technologies are not used. Lastly, we will review the steps of creating a CBE lesson without the use of adaptive technologies.
What is competency-based education? Competency-based education, also known as CBE, is a learning model that recognizes master concepts. Students are awarded for achieving a full understanding of the content.
The CBE learning model is self-paced, and it offers deeper learning through collaborative work, problem-solving, and critical thinking activities, the ability to be self-directed, and use feedback for guidance. The innovative opportunities that deeper learning offers prepare students to master various academic content. The skills they learn will greatly prepare them for college and future careers.
How does CBE connect to gamification without the use of adaptive technologies? A teacher can create opportunities for students to be engaged through the use of learning quests and simulations. What would this look like in the classroom? A student may have a list of different activities or stations they are to visit in a given time to complete at their own pace.
Let's say the unit of study is Earth, moon, and sun relationships. Since this would be a lesson without adaptive technologies, for example, computers and other online software, then other tools must be used. A simulation a student might be engaged in would be creating a model to show the distance between the Earth, and moon, and the sun.
Other activities may include students researching facts about the celestial bodies or sorting information. Activities may include them working independently or as a collaborative team. After each activity is fully completed and the content has been mastered, the student will receive points or badges for their achievement.
How can a CBE lesson be created without adaptive technologies? First, you must develop a storyline based on your content. If I go back to the example that I gave before about doing a unit on Earth, moon, and sun relationships, the storyline may be centered around the people living in ancient times and not having any information about the Earth, the sun, or the moon and how they must go through a series of events to learn about them.
Next, it's important to provide students with goals they need to meet during the activity. And this can also incorporate the list of activities students must complete. The students need to know as a result of the lesson the information they should acquire.
Also, make sure the objectives are at various levels of difficulty. Objectives should also include independent and collaborative work. And, remember, award students for mastery. Objectives that are most difficult to receive the most points. Points and badges will always accumulate and should never be taken away.
What did you learn today? In today's lesson, we defined the competency-based education as a self-paced program that awards students for mastery, and it offers deeper learning. Gamification and CBE are connected through the use of engaging simulations and collaborative task. Lastly, review the steps on how to create a CBE lesson without the use of adaptive technologies, which include creating a storyline based on your content, letting students know the objectives, and awarding them for mastering content.
Also, consider the following. What is the content of study you will use for your CBE lesson? What kind of individual and group activities can you design?
So now it's your turn to apply what you've learned in this video. The additional resources section will be super helpful. This section is designed to help you discover useful ways to apply what you've learned here. Each link includes a brief description, so you can easily target the resources you want.
