Golgi Body

The golgi body is an organelle found in eukaryotic cells.  The structure of the golgi body is made up of stacks of membrane bound compartments.  The flat structures give the golgi apparatus an accordian-like appearance.

 

The primary function of the golgi body is to repackage molecules.  Repackaged molecules are transported in vesicles from the golgi body to areas of the cell they are needed.

 

The golgi body is responsible for packaging molecules into cellular materials like mucus, cellulose, insulin, and enzymes.  

 

Example:

The golgi body is like a warehouse that receives packages and assembles them into functional materials in order to ship them to where they are needed.
