The object of this tutorial is creating a Google Document that you can share via URL and that is read-only.  The folks you share it with then can open it and make a copy, thus not altering the template for further use. 

Users will learn how to create a Google Document and share it to anyone with view only privileges and then instruct the end users on how to open and make a copy of it.

Create a Google Document

Create a Google Doc Template

  1. Go to Google Drive
  2. Click "Create" and choose "Document."
  3. Add content to your document.
  4. Click on the "Share" button on the top right. 
  5. Click "Change" next to the "Private - Only you can access"
  6. Select the radio button "Anyone with the link", make sure that next to "Access" it says "Can view" and click "Save."
  7. You will be taken back to the Sharing Settings screen.  Click the "link to share" field and copy and paste this URL.
  8. You can email or post that URL for sharing.
  9. Instruct your end users that when they open this file to go to File > Make a Copy. Now they have a document they can edit from the template.
