Welcome to this unit, "Analyze the Difference Between Standards, Outcomes, and Competencies in Relation to the Curriculum." The learning objectives in this unit include defining standards, outcomes, and competencies. Evaluating the connections among standards, outcomes, competencies, and skills. And reflecting on competency-based education.

The first to learning objective in the unit is defining standards, outcomes, and competencies. We'll begin by providing you with some concrete definitions for these terms that you can use within the context of your classroom. You can look at the current learning goals that you have already written for your students and identify whether they are outcomes, competencies, or some other type of learning goal.

You'll also learn how to locate and interpret your content standards along with some skill standards that might be useful in your classroom as well. Finally, you'll learn how to write standards, outcomes, and competencies that are aligned with both the content standards and the skill standards.

With a solid understanding of these various types of learning goals and how to locate and interpret your content standards in your skill standards, you'll be ready for learning objective number two-- evaluating the connections among standards, outcomes, competencies, and skills.

We'll begin by simply examining the relationships among all these terms, and then we'll take a deeper look at writing and sharing outcomes, objectives, and competencies. For example, you may wish to write some, "I can" statements that you can post on your classroom wall for students to look at to help them track their progress.

On that note, we'll also talk about the concept of breaking the standards down into smaller pieces, whether these smaller pieces take the form of "I can" statements, or whether you'll simply use them for your own reference, this process of breaking standards into smaller, more manageable chunks can help you to really focus on the content that is most important to you in your classroom, right at this very moment. It also can make those year-end standards a lot more manageable and approachable.

In the third and final learning objective in this unit, we'll reflect on competency-based education. This learning objective follows really naturally from the previous two because it requires a solid understanding of objectives, outcomes, and competencies. We'll review the five design principles of competency based education, and then we'll connect CBE to the essential learning questions that you can use to reflect on your own teaching practices in your classroom.

Finally, we'll examine the connections between CBE and the content standards. You'll be able to take a look at the various learning goals that you've written, including outcomes, objectives, and competencies and consider how you might be able to use those learning goals in a competency-based environment.
