Introduction to Anatomy/Physiology: Unit 1

Author: Nate Holz

Tutorial Objectives

This tutorial covers chapter 1 in our textbook. Unit 1 introduces and establishes the framework upon which all the other units are built. By the end of this unit you should be able to:

  • define anatomy and physiology, and explain how they are related.
  • list and describe the major characteristics of life.
  • list and describe the major requirements of organisms.
  • define homeostasis, and explain its importance to survival.
  • describe a homeostatic mechanism.
  • explain biological levels of organization.
  • describe the locations of the major body cavities.
  • list the organs located in each major body cavity.
  • name the major organ systems and list the organ associated with each.
  • describe the general functions of each organ system.
  • properly use the terms that describe relative positions, body sections, and body regions

Use these objectives as a check list before our first test.

Anatomical Terms

What IS that? WHERE is that? Success in anatomy and the medical field requires the ability to precisely describe locations of structures in the body. This video is an introduction to the terminology of anatomical directions, the anatomical position and planes of section.

Medical Imaging

Medical imaging is the technique and process of creating visual representations of the interior of a body for clinical analysis and medical intervention. Medical imaging seeks to reveal internal structures hidden by the skin and bones, as well as to diagnose and treat disease. Medical imaging also establishes a database of normal anatomy and physiology to make it possible to identify abnormalities. Although imaging of removed organs and tissues can be performed for medical reasons, such procedures are usually considered part of pathology instead of medical imaging.

National Geographic: Secrets of the Body Farm

A body farm is a research facility where decomposition can be studied in a variety of settings. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the decomposition process, permitting the development of techniques for extracting information (such as the timing and circumstances of death) from human remains.
