Welcome to the unit Applying Appropriate Pedagogical Strategies to Implement Competency-Based Instruction in the Classroom. The learning objectives in this unit include analyzing CBE, including iNACOL's five components of CBE, the essential learning questions, and the elements of Understanding by Design. Analyzing the five principles of constructivist teaching, and the definitions of personalization, individualization, and differentiation. Creating a differentiated lesson or unit that includes the five principles of instruction and technology to enhance the identified standards, competencies, and outcomes. And reflecting on how technology can expand the possibilities of CBE in your classroom.

The first learning objective is analyzing competency-based education. In these tutorials we'll begin with the basics. You'll learn about iNACOL's five components of CBE. I'll identify for you the five essential learning questions. And we'll go over the three stages of Understanding by Design in lots of detail so that you have a solid understanding of all of these various elements of competency-based education. After you have a solid understanding, then we can begin to analyze those components and see the connections among all of these different ideas.

You'll be able to reflect right away on whether or not you are already incorporating some of these elements of competency-based education into your classroom. You'll learn some helpful tips for incorporating these design principles and educational philosophies into your classroom. Again, you'll be able to make these implementations right away.

In the next learning objective, we'll be analyzing constructivist teaching. Constructivism is just one of many approaches that you could potentially use within competency-based education. And so that understanding of CBE that we developed in the first learning objective is really going to help us here as we first identify the five principles of constructivist teaching, and then we look at some specific definitions of personalization, individualization, and differentiation. This is going to allow us to compare and contrast these terms not just within the context of constructivist teaching, but also in terms of competency-based education, as well.

Even if you're not actively incorporating CDE into your classroom at this time, you'll still be able to employ some of these constructivist teaching ideas. You'll leave these tutorials with a great understanding of the fundamental ideas of constructivism and how students construct knowledge based on the ways in which we present that knowledge to them. This will help you to create lessons for your students that are more meaningful and more effective.

The next learning objective is for you to actually actively create a differentiated lesson. In these tutorials, we'll review the stages of Understanding by Design, and you'll get an in-depth look at implementing all three of those stages. We'll also explore five principles of instruction that have been identified as common to various instructional design philosophies, not just UBD. We'll also explore the use of technology within both Understanding by Design, competency-based education, and whatever other design principals or educational philosophies you may be currently implementing in your classroom. We'll learn some ways to reflect on this use of technology and on our implementation of CBE and UBD in general.

So the last learning objective in this unit is going to be zero in on that reflection on our use of technology. We'll review some differentiation techniques and the use of learning management systems in the classroom. We'll also touch on the use of adaptive technology to help better meet the needs of all of your learners. Remember, adaptive technology can be really helpful in the implementation of competency-based education. It supports elements of personalized learning and can be used throughout the planning stages of Understanding by Design.

To recap, the learning objectives in this unit include analyzing competency-based education, analyzing the five principles of constructivist teaching and the definitions of personalization, individualization, and differentiation, creating a differentiated lesson, and reflecting on the use of technology in CBE in your classroom.
