Hi, my name is Ashley. And welcome to this introduction to evaluating teacher assessment and evaluation.
What will you learn in this unit? This unit will focus on the teacher evaluation frameworks of Robert Marzano and Charlotte Danielson. We'll look at professional teacher standards, and pay special attention to the National Board Standards, as well as ISTE. We'll look at the strengths and weaknesses of teacher evaluation models. Then lastly, we'll define the purpose of using teacher evaluation models.
This unit will analyze the Danielson teacher evaluation framework and the Marzano teacher evaluation model. The lessons will provide background knowledge of the models. Explain the domains and elements that come together to make the framework. And lastly, show how the evaluation models can be applied in the evaluation process.
These lessons will be crucial in understanding because your school probably uses one of these frameworks. You will learn through the unit that a lot of states and districts have similar evaluation models, and most models have been adapted from the Danielson or Marzano teacher evaluation model.
This unit is about evaluating teacher performance, and in order to do that, professional teacher standards must be discussed. This unit will go over the standards that teachers must adhere to depending on the model used. This unit will define or review the purpose of professional teachers standards. We'll also look at examples such as the National Board Teacher Standards and ISTE teacher standards. This will be important to know when discussing the Marzano and Danielson teacher models in order to see the relationship between the standards and the frameworks.
After discussions on Marzano and Danielson teacher evaluation models and the professional teacher standards, we'll look at the pros and cons of teacher evaluation models. We'll look at the controversies behind teacher evaluation models and what major teacher unions, such as NEA and AFT, say about the limitations of these evaluation systems. You may find that some of the issues with teacher evaluation models are the same issues that you have experienced. This is where we'll take a look at it in great detail.
Lastly, this unit will state the purpose of evaluation models. Evaluation models are not just for the teacher, as you may think, but they're for students, as well as the whole school community. We will define the purpose of the evaluation models, and then apply them so that you may see how it can be used to improve your performance. This part of the unit will especially be important if you've ever wondered why you have to have observations or why must you make goals the beginning of the year. This will be a very important lesson.
So let's recap the main points of this unit. This unit will focus on the teacher evaluation frameworks of Marzano and Danielson. We'll look at professional teacher standards, as well as mentioning the National Board Standards, as well as ISTE. We will identify the strengths and weaknesses of teacher evaluation models, and define the purpose of using these evaluation systems in schools today.
So now you're ready to begin the unit on evaluating teacher assessment and evaluation. You will learn so much about the evaluation process as a result of this unit.
