Welcome to this unit-- implementing competency-based, personalized instruction. Here are the learning objectives that will be covered in this unit-- Competency-Based Education, including an examination of iNACOL's 5 components of CBE, the DuFour's Learning Questions, and the elements of Understanding by Design; Problem Based Learning; developing a lesson or entire unit using Competency-Based Education, Problem Based Learning, and Understanding by Design; and finally, the connections between CBE and PBL and personalized learning.

First, in our tutorials on Competency-Based Education, we'll learn about the history of CBE, the five components of CBE, and the connections between the Understanding by Design lesson design process and CBE. In these tutorials, you'll learn practical ways to implement Competency-Based Education into your classroom environment, whether you embrace CBE in its entirety or you implement the elements of it that are a great fit for you and your students.

Next in our tutorials that focus on Problem Based Learning, we'll talk about the theory that started PBL and the elements and steps that currently define it. We'll learn about some of the well-researched benefits of Problem Based Learning as well. After learning about both CBE and PBL, you'll be ready to develop a lesson or an entire unit incorporating elements of both CBE and PBL. We'll implement the Understanding by Design lesson design process with a focus on student collaboration and ownership. You can use the processes and the tips shared in these tutorials to develop lessons and units that are aligned with content standards and that include objectives and essential questions that will further your students' learning.

Throughout this unit, we'll discuss how Competency-Based Education and Problem Based Learning connect to personalized learning. We'll identify the five elements of personalized learning and see how those elements connect with both of the previously mentioned methodologies. Finally, we'll look at how we can gather and use feedback from both students and our peers. Throughout all of the tutorials in this unit, the focus will be on how you can incorporate elements of Competency-Based Education, Problem Based Learning, Understanding by Design, and personalized learning to help increase student engagement and improve student performance in your classroom.

To recap, the learning objectives of this unit include Competency-Based Education; Problem Based Learning; developing a lesson or a unit using elements of CBE, PBL, and Understanding by Design; and finally, the elements of personalized learning and their connections to both CBE and PBL. Welcome to the unit. I hope you'll join me in my tutorials on Competency-Based Education and personalized instruction.
