Hi, my name is Ashley, and welcome to this introduction to implementing competency-based personalized instruction. What will you learn in this unit? This unit will cover many learning objectives.

We will analyze competency-based education, including iNACOL's five components of CBE, the essential questions, and the elements of understanding by design. We'll also touch on problem-based learning as it is defined by the Buck Institute. We will go through the steps on how to create your own CBE, PBL lesson. Then we'll turn right around and go over ways to reflect on your lessons, ensuring that it incorporates personalization for your students.

In this unit, we will look at Competency-Based Education. Often, you will see the acronym CBE. CBE refers to students working until mastery is achieved. We will review the five design principles of CBE.

This will definitely come in handy when we demonstrate how to incorporate the CBE elements in your own lesson. We will also analyze how CBC is related to personalized learning. We will connect the CBE components back to essential learning questions and demonstrate how creating effective essential questions motivates students to be responsible of their learning and measure their progress.

Problem-based learning is a method of teaching in which students learn by investigating a complex question, problem, or challenge. In this unit, we will look at the elements of problem-based learning and what researchers have to say about the benefits of PBL for students. We will also incorporate the elements of PBL in creating a lesson that is not only PBL-aligned, but also aligned with CBE.

Like I have mentioned, we will create a CBE, PBL lesson. You will definitely be ready to advance to this part of the unit once you have learned the components of CBE and PBL. You will find that incorporating these two lesson approaches encourages personalization for your students.

Your lessons should provide flexible learning that gives students the opportunity to master objectives. In this part of the unit, we will also go over how to allow student choice in your lessons and activities. This will definitely be an area that your students will take pleasure in, being able to make decisions about their own learning.

And when you've created your lesson and have presented it to your students, we'll go over how you can reflect on your lesson and use the feedback from your students and peers to improve it for the next time. We will review different ways to reflect on your CBE, PBL lesson, and types of questions you can ask yourself as you reflect that may help you dig deeper into the results of the lesson and decide whether it encouraged personalization in your classroom.
