what's covered
In this lesson, you will be introduced to rules and risk management related to telehealth. Specifically, this lesson will cover
  1. Introduction

1. Introduction

This course focuses on rules and risk management for nurses practicing synchronous telehealth. Telehealth nursing, telenursing, and nursing telepractice are all commonly used terms to describe this field. Telehealth has gained popularity and is used to facilitate caring for patients in rural and underserved areas, to improve continuity of care, to increase convenience for patients outside normal office hours, and to promote social distancing during health emergency situations.

Telehealth takes many forms in the nursing field. The most common are triage, assessment of patient symptoms, collaborating on a patient plan of care across disciplines, patient education, and outcome evaluation. Nurses who practice telehealth may help patients, families, and the community in all fields of care, including these:

  • Well health or yearly visits
  • Management of chronic diseases and disabilities
  • Diagnosis and management of acute illnesses, including imaging and lab requests
  • Patient education and support, including end-of-life care
  • Evaluation of care outcomes
Doing your research up front to fully understand the complexities, rules, and risks of implementing a telehealth program will likely save you significant time and resources later.
