Author: Capella Healthcare

what's covered
In this lesson, you will be introduced to rules and risk management related to telehealth. Specifically, this lesson will cover
  1. Introduction
  2. Practicing Telehealth

1. Introduction

Since the early 1990s, advancements in technology and communication have transformed how healthcare is delivered. The ability to transfer large quantities of data quickly and securely over long distances has led both clinicians and patients to believe that telehealth can be a cost-effective, safe, and reliable method of delivering healthcare.

Telehealth presents a set of distinctive risk management concerns. This course will address solutions for mitigating the risks related to the practice of telehealth

2. Practicing Telehealth

There are several ways in which telehealth may be practiced in the nursing field. The most common is triage, which refers to prioritizing the urgency of patient needs, assessment of patient symptoms, collaborating on a patient plan of care across disciplines, patient education, and outcome evaluation.

Nurses who practice telehealth may help patients, families, and the community in all fields of care, including:

  • Well health or yearly visits
  • Management of chronic diseases and disabilities
  • Diagnosis and management of acute illnesses, including imaging and lab requests
  • Patient education and support, including end-of-life care
  • Evaluation of care outcomes
