Ionic Bonding

Ionic Bonding

Author: Snappy Cappie

After viewing this packet the learner will
1) understand the differences between a covalent bond, a polar covalent bond, and an ionic bond.
2) know that the metal gives electrons and the non-metal receives them.
3) understand the difference between an ionic lattice and a molecule.
4) be able to identify where the ionic bond is within an ionic lattice.

This is a quick explanation of what an ionic bond is and what it is not. Attention is given to the bonding "spectrum" and the fact that ionic bonds do not form molecules, but are instead found in ionic lattices.
