Hi, my name is Ashley, and today's lesson is titled ISTE Standards and Potential Inclusion in Evaluation. In today's lesson, we will discuss how ISTE teacher standards are used for teacher evaluations. We'll look at the five ISTE teacher standards. We will demonstrate how the ISTE teacher standards are related to Danielson and Marzano. And lastly, we'll look at how the standards are applied to teacher evaluation.
How are ISTE teacher standards used for teacher evaluations? International Society for Technology and Education, also known as ISTE, teacher standards can be found in some teacher evaluation rubrics but not all of them. This evaluation tool can be useful as teachers continue to integrate technology in the classroom, and evaluators can assess teacher performance in these technology-rich classrooms. The ISTE teachers standards can be used to give feedback to help teachers improve on integrating technology into their lessons.
What are ISTE teacher standards? Here are the five teacher standards, but it's also important to know that ISTE standards are also for students, coaches, technology teachers, and administrators. When abiding by the teacher standards, teachers should guide students through learning and encourage creativity. Teachers should develop learning experiences and assessments that are integrated with technology, whether you're using online resources or digital assessments opposed to paper and pencil tests.
It's important for teachers to model how technology should be used for learning. Sometimes students think anything that involves technology is a game. But teachers must show students that there's a real purpose for the technology that's being used and how it can be used as an instructional tool. Teachers should encourage students to be responsible when utilizing technology and ensuring that they're using it appropriately in the school atmosphere. Lastly, teachers should seek professional development opportunities to allow them to absorb other ways technology can be used in the classroom and to successfully implement them in their own teaching.
How are ISTE teacher standards related to Danielson and Marzano? If you don't know already, Danielson and Marzano are key players in creating teacher evaluation models. Domain 4 for both Danielson and Marzano both encourage using professional development in order to enhance one's knowledge in order to use for classroom purposes. This aligns with standard 4 of the ISTE standards, which also encourages teachers to seek professional development. As a teacher, I look forward to opportunities where I can go to professional development workshops and seminars, and I'm eager to apply what I've learned to my lessons and activities.
Domain 1 in Danielson and domain 2 with the Marzano model both have to do with planning and instruction, which aligns with standard 2, planning and developing technology-enhanced lessons. These standards can provide insight on a teacher's performance. If an observer can tell the teacher didn't really put much thought in the technology that was being used and there was no real significance, then the teacher may need feedback and assistance in the standard 2 performance area.
How are ISTE teacher standards applied? ISTE standards can be used by administrators, evaluators, and other professionals who evaluate teachers to offer feedback and support for teachers. The standards help to promote teacher effectiveness and using and applying technology into instruction. Schools are always working towards building 21st century skills, such as creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. ISTE standards should be fully integrated into teaching practices and professional development goals in order to meet these 21st century skills. If we want students to be able to use technology appropriately, then teachers have to be trained and evaluated on the implementation of technology.
In today's lesson, we examined how ISTE teacher standards are used to evaluate teacher performance. We reviewed the standards, one of which is that teachers should seek professional development opportunities to enhance their skills and performance. We compared the ISTE teacher standards to the frameworks of Danielson and Marzano and demonstrated how they both evaluate teachers on planning and instruction. Lastly, we discussed how ISTE teacher standards can be used by administrators to give feedback and support to teachers. As we bring the lesson to a close, consider how ISTE standards help provide feedback to enhance the performance of teachers when implementing technology in the classroom.
