Author: Anthony Varela

At the end of this lesson, you will be expected to generate a list of turn by turn directions using left, right, and straight to correctly describe how to travel from one direction to another.

Practice Activity

Scenario:

You need to plan a route to drive from (1) your friend's house to (2) your home.  Examine the map below.  Plan the most direct route from your friend's house to your house, and provide turn by turn directions (using relative directions, rather than cardinal directions).

Feedback:

First, we need to decide on the most efficient route.  The most efficient route involves as few turns as possible.  There are a couple of options, as they all involve only 3 turns, which is the fewest number of turns possible.  You may have decided on these routes:

  1. South on Seventh St.
  2. West on Colonial Rd.
  3. South on Fifth St.
  4. West on Colonial Rd.

Or:

  1. South on Seventh St.
  2. West on Beacon St.
  3. South on Fifth St.
  4. West on Colonial Rd.

Or:

  1. North on Seventh St
  2. West on Auburn Ave.
  3. South on Fifth St.
  4. West on Colonial Rd.

You might prefer the first route for a number of different reasons.  First, it doesn't involve going north, as in the third option, which seems unnecessarily since your house is to the southwest.  Secondly, it involves the fewest number of streets, because we travel on Colonial Road twice.  This means there are less street names to remember.

Now that we have decided on the route, let's provide turn by turn directions:

  1. Head south on Seventh St.
  2. Turn right onto Colonial Rd.
  3. Turn left onto Fifth St.
  4. Turn right onto Colonial Rd.
