The objective of this lesson is to introduce popular literary devices to students. They should be able to pick out their own examples (definitions provided at this early stage) in our readings in the classroom and in everyday culture through music, tv shows, and movies that they like personally.
Students will be given an overview of the more common literary devices through a youtube video, a website which defines them, and access to online flashcards if they wish to further test themselves. They will be asked to define the different devices talked about in the video using their own words and their own examples as a part of the their WSQ. In class we will go over any and all questions that the students come up with. We will have an ongoing project to find as many of these devices as we can in our daily lives and readings and to write them on a group poster. A competition could be made out of this, between different class periods or within the class itself for an added little push. In this way students learn to look for, find, and define literary devices in all different formats which will make it easier for them to use these devices in their own writings or understand them in readings.
Be prepared to talk about some of these devices and terms. In class we will brainstorm of some popular and/or funny literary devices that we use (and may not realize) and see around us on a daily basis.
