Hi, I'm Jeff. And in this lesson, we'll learn about some of the major management skills needed for effective leadership. We'll talk about the skills that all managers must have and how these skills impact a small business manager.
So let's get started. Managers need a selection of skills to be effective leaders, as well as to motivate their employees and accomplish work in a timely manner. And the need for these skills extends to all types of managers. For example, an information manager may need more technical skills than other managers in order to complete their role, but they also need all of the other skills we'll discuss to do their job effectively.
Every manager needs the following skills to succeed. Technical skills, this is the ability to do a particular job or task. In the modern world, this has become more important since skills related to the operation of technology have become necessary in almost every role.
Human relations skills, this is the ability to interact with others. Managers manage people. So they must be able to motivate and encourage others to do their work. Conceptual skills, a manager needs the ability to conceptualize complex issues and then communicate about those issues in a clearer manner with their employees.
Decision-making skills, a manager must make sound decisions quickly. And time management skills, they must have the ability to plan out schedules and control the usage of time. A manager must also execute plans so that the correct deliverable is reached at the end of the plan.
Now let's run through some examples where these skills are beneficial and also where the lack of these skills can cause issues. Technical, a marketing manager who is fluent in social media as a technical skill will excel in his role where a marketing manager who doesn't know how to use email will probably fail due to his lack of skills.
Human relations, a manager who has developed the ability to have calm conversations with employees when they are angry is an asset. A manager who has never developed the ability to be empathic will likely not succeed in most organizations. Conceptual, if a PR manager knows how to translate the features of a new tablet computer into language that is both understandable and exciting to media groups, they will be more effective.
An operations manager who is unable to understand the workings of their production line in order to manage improvements will fail. Decision-making, a financial manager must make decisions every day about the allocation of budgets. While any manager who takes too long to make a decision will constantly be over-budget and over-schedule.
And time management operations managers must understand how to manage the time of each person on their team so work will continue in an optimized manner, while an information manager who doesn't have the skill and attempts any major software or hardware update may find themselves managing projects that never seem to end. But how do businesses that have only a few or perhaps only one manager handle the need for these skills? Even in a small business with few managers, it's ideal if every manager has these skills. That's why it's important for a person to evaluate their capabilities as a manager before launching a new business.
Small businesses that don't have managers with these skills may fail as a result. So as each new managers hired, it's good advice to find managers that either exhibit all of these skills or at least fill in the areas where current managers are weaker. So whether the organization is small or large, these skills should be the primary consideration when hiring managers.
All right, well done. In this lesson, we discussed why managers need skills. We learned about the management skills all managers should have.
We discussed some examples where having these skills or lacking them can lead to success or failure. And we talked about the challenges small businesses face as related to these skills. Thanks for your time, and have a great day.
