Hi, I'm Jeff. And in this lesson, we'll learn about managers and the key roles they play in the management of an organization. So let's get started. Now depending on the size of the company, there might be a variety of organizational structures. But once an organization has enough employees, within the structure, there will be top, middle, and first line managers.
What are these different types of managers? Top managers are those who make the broad decisions about a company. They have titles, such as president, CEO or vice president over various departments such as operations and finance
Middle managers often oversee production operations or divisions while reporting to the top managers. They have titles such as plant manager, operations manager, and division manager. And first line managers are those who oversee small teams or subdivisions of the operations. They have titles such as office manager, supervisor, or group leader.
In a larger organization, management will often be subdivided by the different areas of business operations. Let's run through a few examples of these areas and the managers that oversee them. Human resource managers, these managers oversee hiring and firing practices and the employee regulations that define the workplace. Operations managers, these managers oversee the process of goods or service production.
Marketing managers, now we've already discussed these managers. They define and manage the marketing strategy for a business. Information managers, they manage the technology within a company that is used by the employees, the customers, and other organizations that coordinate with the business.
Financial managers, if it has to do with money within a company, it will often go through the financial managers. They are responsible for the financial state and reporting of an organization. Public relations managers, these managers coordinate with the various media that reports on individual businesses and industries.
And R&D managers, they oversee the research and development of new products and services. And, yes, there might be other management areas based on the organization, but these are the most common ones within each of these different management roles. All managers must deal with different types of resources.
These resources can be material, such as the physical resources used in production. Human, nearly all managers oversee people. So they must have the skills necessary to motivate their work.
Financial, whether it is explicit or not budgets and the management of resources that cost money are the role of every manager. And informational resources, managers must deal with information at all levels, such as the data on sales and marketing, reports on the performance of information systems, or the quality control associated with production. Each manager must carefully balance the amount of time and investment devoted to these resources.
All right, well done. In this lesson, we discussed what managers are as a whole, talked about some examples of individual management roles, and discussed the resources that all managers must oversee. Thanks for your time, and have a great day.
