An element that exhibits the physical and chemical properties of metals has metallic character. These elements would have a shiny luster, be good conductors of heat and electricity, and have other properties common to metals.
As you go across a period on the periodic table, the most metallic elements are on the left side of the periodic table, with increasing metallic character as you go down a column. Elements that are less metallic are found on the right of the periodic table.
