Understanding DNS is important for network functionality. The best DNS zone to create in a network is an Active Directory Integrated Zone.  To see more about this, see the tutorials related to the MOAC Active Directory configuration.

Being able to manage DNS manually is a valuable troubleshooting skill.  Know how to make and adjust A/AAAA Host records.  DNS is only going to be more important with implementation of IPv6.  While it is easy to memorize a variety of 192.168.1.100 type addresses, memorizing this is going to be more difficult:
