This unit will deal with the study of Genetics, one of the most rapidly expanding fields of biology today.  It is designed to provide you with an understanding of current theory on the nature and mechanism of expression of genetic information in the cell.  The point of view of this unit is one of Science, Technology and Society.  It will examine the interrelationships among these three components and will look at issues raised by science as they affect the society in which you live.

Applications of Molecular Genetics - Presentation

This assignment will also be posted as its own tutorial. Students will work in pairs or independently to research and present on their chosen topic for 5 min at the beginning of a designated class. Presentations will begin in January after the Winter Break.

Student Learning Package: Molecular Genetics

This package identifies key resources, expectations that students are expected to achieve (based on the Ministry of Education requirements), a vocabulary list and review questions. This package provides context as well as details of what students need to know and be able to do to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts of this unit. In addition a vocabulary review list and review questions are provided at the end of the package.
Students should pay particular attention to the verbs used in the written expectations to know depth of understanding that is expected of them. For example, "list" or "define" is at just a knowledge level, "distinguish between" requires a demonstration of differences as well as the knowledge of what these are, "explain" and "describe" require a more in-depth understanding of (usually) a process which incorporates the knowledge and understanding of terms and sub-processes.

Sample Unit Test

Sample test from a few years ago. Unit content should be reviewed prior to attempting this test.
For best results: complete the test within 60 min in test-taking-like conditions (quite, no additional resources beyond codon table) and 2 days prior to the scheduled test date.
You should check the content yourself (from notes, textbook, Sophia resources) and bring completed test to a meeting with Ms O for feedback on your short and extended response answers.

Really good web resources

DNA from the Beginning  http://www.dnaftb.org/ is a site with animation mini-lessons around genetic concepts.  The ones that will be of most interest to you in this unit come from the Molecules of Genetics and a few of the Genetic Organization and Control. (Dolan DNA Learning Centre, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory)

Genetic Science Learning Centre http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/ site contains current information about genetics and its applications.  Each topic is described well and supported with animations, etc. Worth checking into! (University of Utah)
