Organisms: Adaptations to Environment

Author: Amanda Soderlind

An adaptation is a change an organism makes to be better suited to their environment. Adaptations are forms of evolution that occur over long periods of time. Both plants and animals can make adaptations. For example, ducks have evolved webbed feet to aid them in swimming. This adaptation allows them to swim in the water more easily and faster allowing them to be more efficient hunters in the water. Plants that live in the tundra are often very dark colored to help them absorb heat, are usually low growing and often grow in clumps to help conserve energy and maintain heat.  Organisms that make adaptations to be better suited in their specific environment have a better chance of survival and a better chance to reproduce than organisms that do not.
